DESIGNING A TVOS SHOPPING APP
OVERVIEW
Apps are the future of TV, so Applovin hosted a tvOS Hackathon. Developers and designers formed into groups and had a total of 24 hours to submit their best Apple TV app. I partnered up with developer Vince Davis and together we built ShowShop, an tvOS app that allows you to find clothing and accessories from your favorite TV shows, while simultaneously watching your show in the comfort of your living room. Our innovative ideation, design, and rapid development resulted in our winning the Twitter Digits challenge.
PROBLEM
Many people look to film and TV for fashion inspiration, however, there seems to be a disconnect between watching and shopping. There is no easy and efficient way to shop for what you see on your favorite shows or movies.
OUTCOME
ShowShop designed a quick and accessible shopping experience by using the TV as a bridge between watching and shopping. One can quickly shop for their favorite items and return back to their show all in one place by using Google’s image recognition API to sort and filter content.
* We won the challenge for the best use of integrated Twitter Digits!

DESIGN PROCESS
01. DEFINE
Time limitation can be the hardest challenge when developing a product during a hackathon. Not having the resources to conduct user research, I decided to analyze the competitive landscape, both on Apple TV and the Web.
Who is the target user?:
Adults between the ages of 18-50
Competitor Analysis
Does this concept already exist? The short answer is no (yay!)
Shop Your TV
Channel: Web
Pros: Simple UI, image of character and item, simple search, forum feature, social media comment feature.
Cons: Curated selections, non-responsive design, website only- no app, not an eCommerce site (takes you to an outside source for purchasing), Not a tvOS app
Worn On TV
Channel: Web
Pros: Most popular searches on landing page, mobile friendly, filter search by channel and show.
Cons: Busy UI, Confusing navigation, unintuitive UI, website only (no app), not a tvOS app
Gilt
Channel: tvOS
Pros: Simple UI, tvOS app, built in e-commerce feature, easy navigation
Cons: Not a 'show shopping' app, limited search features, basic shopping app
02. IDEATE & HANDOFF
In order to design and build our concept in less than 24 hours, we took an agile approach. While I sketched out designs, engineer Vince Davis started to build the backend infrastructure.

Finished Design and Handoff
3-D Logo Design
For the logo, we used the Apple TV parallax effect. This included creating three separate image layers and using CSS3, HTML, and some JQuery to complete the icon. The final product is a 3-dimensional version of this image.
NEXT STEPS
If this concept were to be built and shipped, I would do thorough user research to improve the UX and further explore branding to advance the look and feel.
